Assessing Listening Skill

Listening is one of the language skills that involves understanding spoken language. It requires the ability to recognize sounds, understand words and grammar, and interpret meaning in context.
Listening assessment aims to evaluate students’ ability to comprehend spoken information accurately. It measures how well students can understand the speaker’s ideas, tone, and message from the audio they hear.

The main purpose of listening assessment is to find out how well students understand the main idea of the spoken text, identify specific information from what they hear, infer meaning from the context, and follow spoken instructions accurately. Listening assessment also aims to evaluate students’ ability to focus on details, interpret the speaker’s tone, and respond appropriately to oral information. Through listening activities, teachers can measure students’ comprehension level and identify their strengths or difficulties in understanding spoken English. This helps improve their overall communication skills, especially in real-life situations where listening plays an important role.

For example: Task based on "English For Nusantara" untuk SMP/MTs kelas 9 Kurikulum merdeka, 2022. Worksheet 3.2.

Instruction:
Listen attentively to the audio entitled The Story of Andre and Princess Suripit (Part 2). Focus on the words, expressions, and details mentioned in the story. After listening, fill in the blanks in the passage using the correct words from the box provided. Then, answer the comprehension questions based on what you have heard. Do not guess before listening carefully, and make sure your answers reflect the information from the audio accurately. You may listen to the audio twice to help you understand the content better and complete all tasks correctly.

Scoring System:
The scoring in this listening assessment is divided into two parts as shown in the rubric below. The first part is Accuracy, which assesses how many correct answers students provide in filling the blanks. Each correct answer is worth 1 point, with a total of 5 points available. The second part is Comprehension Questions, which evaluates students’ understanding of the story through multiple-choice questions. Each correct answer is also worth 1 point, with a total of 5 points available. The maximum score for this activity is 10 points, representing students’ overall listening comprehension ability.

Assessment Scenario:

In this assessment, students will listen to an audio recording of The Story of Andre and Princess Suripit (Part 2). The teacher plays the audio twice to ensure all students have a fair opportunity to understand the content. During the first listening, students focus on understanding the general meaning and flow of the story. During the second listening, they concentrate on completing the missing words and answering the comprehension questions. After finishing the activity, students submit their answer sheets to the teacher for evaluation based on accuracy and comprehension.

Final Calculation:
Each correct blank in the fill-in-the-gap section is worth 1 point (5 items total = 5 points).
Each correct answer in the comprehension questions is worth 1 point (5 items total = 5 points).
The maximum total score is 10 points.

Formula:
Final Score = (Total Correct Answers ÷ 10) × 100

Example:
If a student answers 8 questions correctly out of 10, the calculation is:
(8 ÷ 10) × 100 = 80

Thus, the student’s final score is 80, which indicates a good level of listening comprehension.
