RUBRIC IN ENGLISH LEARNING ASSESSMENT

A rubric is an assessment tool used by teachers to evaluate students’ performance based on specific and measurable criteria. In the context of senior high school (SMA), a rubric serves as a clear guide for both teachers and students to understand how learning outcomes especially in skills like speaking, writing, reading, and listening will be assessed.

Rubrics make assessment more objective, transparent, and consistent. They also help students understand what is expected in their tasks or performances, allowing them to take an active role in improving their skills.

  1. To provide clear assessment standard. Students know exactly what aspects are being assessed (e.g., fluency, vocabulary, grammar, organization, etc.).
  2. To ensure fairness and consistency. All students are evaluated based on the same criteria, not on personal impressions.
  3. To give detailed and constructive feedback. Teachers can explain which parts are strong and which need improvement.

In a speaking assessment, a teacher does not only check if the student can speak English, but evaluates the performance based on several aspects, such as:

  4. Vocabulary (variety and appropriateness of words used)
